Timing matters here. The best time to visit is between mid-December and end of April, and then end of July to mid-November — both for the Whale Tail and for whale watching season. Check the tide chart before heading in, as at high tide the sandbar disappears entirely beneath the waves.

The dreamy concept of “luxury” in the humid jungles of Costa Rica just might clash with reality, despite what glitzy Instagram reels might suggest. One cannot be shocked when a spider the size of a cantaloupe brazenly crawls along the edge of the Infiniti pool before you, or if a giant millipede slithers across your terrace while enjoying a morning cappuccino. At times the rain, the all-encompassing wet of the tropics, may fuel a curmudgeon’s grump. And simply getting to your remote destination from the Central American country’s twin major airports can seem like an Odyssean affair in itself—an epic journey of buses, ferries and damper-challenged taxis laboring over pitted roads that will test the patience of most adventurers. To be totally honest, a Costa Rican jungle vacation is not for everyone.

But for some, to be sure, it is heaven. Or better said actually, a Garden of Eden. Simply because of the Genesis-level wildlife that scurries, swings and flaps from all directions. When you stand in the solace of your private terrace and stare out to a rolling canopy of jungle, listening to the frogs chirping and cicadas chittering through the dense jungle, every minute of the long trek becomes worth it. The scene that plays out before you so raw, so abundant of nature, you almost expect to hear Richard Attenborough narrating the King Vulture soaring overhead.

And yes, there are hours when torrential rains soak the mountain fat, and it is all wonderful and sublime and at times even terrifying. But the drama makes you feel alive. And the flip-side of the coin from those lightning storms are other moments, like mornings when we awoke to a sky so Halcyon bright it appeared like one of those movies when the hero dies and transitions to Saint Peter‘s Gates, eyes flooded in golden, unreal light. If that vision is the sort of thing that gets you off, then Costa Rica’s Hotel Three Sixty is for you.

Sitting nearly 1,000 feet above the South Pacific Puntarenas coastline on a private 58-acre rainforest reserve, the adults-only Hotel Three Sixty was conceived as a mountaintop sanctuary where sweeping views, impenetrable tranquility, and excellent service—especially in Costa Rica, where the pura vida philosophy can feel at odds with lofty American expectations—do your vacation’s heavy lifting. The boutique hotel is small in scale, just a dozen villas, but massive on horizon and architectural design.

After a long drive to this remote jungle—although there is a small airport nearby for puddle jumpers to save time—we arrived through the canopy into a breezy, sculptural lobby that frames the coast like a cinema screen. A dry pool of polished stones plays central hub in the courtyard… at least till the rains come, when it transforms into a tropical fountain. An open-air lobby, curving infinity pool, Kua Kua restaurant and 360 Bar surround it, positioned so the sapphire Pacific and emerald mountains play both centerstage and backdrop in every direction.

From there paths lead to freestanding villas where floor-to-ceiling sliding doors dissolve into your magical terrace; outdoor showers borrow the forest as a “feature wall,” and custom furnishings keep the palette tropical-modern rather than rustic. The rooms are large and well equipped with firm king-size Simmons Beautyrest Recharge mattresses and potent air conditioning. But the real stars here are the aforementioned terraces—you’ll spend every free moment possible on your 130 square-foot balcony, greeting mornings with breakfast delivered to your room (fresh juices, coconut water, well-cooked farm eggs, French toast piled with fresh fruit, dark roasted Costa Rican coffee, etc.), all set to the ceaseless soundtrack of the jungle.

The guiding hand here at the Hotel Three Sixty is its owner, founder and visionary Trevor Ling—an English expat who pivoted from three decades in wealth management to hospitality. Ling opened Hotel Three Sixty with investor friends in 2017/2018, and during a sunny lunch at Kua Kua he summed up its ethos as “authentic, laid-back luxury.” Translation: solace over opulent pageantry, nature over noise, and helmed by a staff who know when to appear and when to melt away into the ferns. Ling’s philosophy shows up in the intimate scale, the remote setting built high away from neighbors, and the sophisticated tone—utterly grown-up, but without any pretension. Or screaming children, arguably the best blessing of all.

Ling’s ethos also reveals itself in the property’s sustainability choices: minimizing the built footprint to under 8% of the land, using ecological products and toiletries from Costa Rican brand RAW Botanicals in the bathroom, sourcing local ingredients for nourishment, and planting a tree for every night a guest stays through a partnership with One Tree Planted. To be transparent, we did lament the reliance on single-use plastics at times, including the morning coffee cup. Ling explained the at-times tenuous recycling complications of Puntarenas, so we’ll take his word.

The culinary heart of the Hotel Three Sixty is Kua Kua, aka “butterfly” in the local Boruca language—a nod to the transformational quality of the place. With well prepared sushi offerings, as well as comfort options like fried chicken sandwiches and tempura vegetables, Executive Chef Fernando Gamboa also leans on his Tico roots for plates like his whole snapper, oven baked and served with patacones and Costa Rican Caribbean sauce. The adjoining Bar 360 underscores the quality of Ling’s team, as whoever stocks the shelves with the Cascahuin Tahona Blanco—one of the finest, and tough to source tequilas on the planet—deserves a raise.

Back to the design for a moment. Architecture here does more than hold up the walls; it is a storytelling device. Understandable, as high from this epic vantage point—that which gives the hotel its name—you want the view to play protagonist, any structures hiding off to the side, staying offstage as much as possible. Our favorite spot being the infinity pool, wrapping the edge of the main building so the view shifts as you swim, providing a cool respite from the torrid jungle heat. Hours are happily invested here sipping cocktails, scanning details of the rainforest fading into the Pacific below. At sunset, the pool becomes a mirror for the Gauguin-painted sky.

The name isn’t marketing puff; you really do get 360-degree vistas that run from the famed white sand beaches of Manuel Antonio National Park in nearby Quepos down to the Osa Peninsula, one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet. Boasting over 400 species of birds, its exotic wildlife also includes sloths, tapirs, squirrel and howler monkeys, and even the rare jaguar. But you don’t have to travel two hours to the Corcovado National Park to see some of these spectacles, as several afternoons a pair of yellow-throated toucans came and perched 20 feet from our tumblers full of Cascahuin. Frequently a troop of capuchin monkeys migrate their way to the surrounding trees, hanging from their tails and leaping with absurd agility from branch to branch, seemingly just for our amusement. Of note, the hotel just launched a partnership with Swarovski Optik supplying binoculars to better view these spectacles with greater detail.

As aesthetically rewarding as the location is, the Hotel Three Sixty’s sense of place in Costa Rica really clicks when you step off-property. Minutes downhill are Ojochal’s quiet beaches—Playa Tortuga for tidepool wandering, Playa Piñuela for low-key swims, and Playa Ventanas, where the jungle tumbles to a crescent of sand punctured by sea caves (the eponymous “ventanas,” or windows) that sigh open with the tide. The hotel sits close enough for a spontaneous beach run (about a 15-minute drive), but far enough to keep the soundtrack confined to birds and warm breezes.

Our favorite destination by far, however, was the Parque Nacional Marino Ballena (aka Whale Marine), one of Costa Rica’s most singular stretches of coastline—and the hotel’s crown jewel natural playground. At low tide, two beaches meet at Punta Uvita to form the famous “Whale Tail”: a sand-and-rock tombolo that from a birds-eye view looks exactly like its name implies. In the morning during the the ebb we strolled almost a mile out along the tail deep into the sea, turning for a breathtaking view of the palm-studded wilderness behind us. At flood, the two bodies of water zippered up to the shore determinedly, waves colliding with violence, erasing the tail entirely. A very cool aquatic event to witness while sipping coconuts in the sun. The fact that a geological “whale’s tail” somehow exists on a coast considered one of the best places on Earth to witness the migration of humpbacks wasn’t lost on us: it’s the sort of cosmic punchline that delivers this divine stretch of Costa Rica’s magic.

At a time when most North American cities were experiencing a cold front of the most miserable proportions, I – with my carry-on luggage in hand – wheeled my way through bright sunshine, warmth (and moderate humidity) from San Jose, Costa Rica’s international airport to their much smaller, yet incredibly modern, domestic terminal.

After a quick five-minute walk, and a check-in process which included weighing myself and my bags, I proceeded through security to catch my flight from the capital to Quepos, a remote destination about 110 miles away.

Packed into our small hopper flight, I took a seat right behind the first officer, eager to shadow her instruments and watch the Costa Rican countryside float by below. It was my first time in Costa Rica, and I was eager to take in all I could during my brief stay.

And while to some, taking an additional flight may feel like a hassle (or the prospect seems frightening on such a small plane), the resort I was headed to in the Costa Rican mountains was well worth any misgivings I may have had traveling there.

It became my evening ritual to sit in one of the stylish loungers or take a dip in the pool, watching the sun sink below the sea with a cocktail in hand.

That’s one of the best features of Hotel Three Sixty’s strategic location; given its western-facing orientation towards the Pacific Ocean, you have a perfect, unobstructed view of the brilliantly colored sunset every night. In the evenings, the pool becomes the perfect spot to stargaze as well, with only the low, ambient light from the restaurant behind you.

Otherwise, it was the most stunning place to take in this mountaintop location, where during the day it wasn’t uncommon to see toucans chatting in the trees or, if you’re lucky, a sloth moseying across a branch.

If you want to stay on-property for an afternoon of relaxation, book a service with the hotel’s spa. Though the spa facilities are petite, given the hotel’s small population, booking a massage service was not a problem in the slightest.

The spa bungalow was large enough to accommodate a couples service, and you can end your massage with a nice soak in the spa area’s above-ground hot tub. Surrounded by the jungle and its natural song of animal chirps, it’s an extremely unique experience.

As for dining, the more premium villas have the option of choosing an al-fresco breakfast on your private balcony or terrace, but for other meals including dinner, the hotel’s signature restaurant, Kua Kua was nothing short of a delight.

Located in the same stunning central building as the lobby, with the infinity pool spread out before it, Kua Kua’s newly debuted menu features international fare with exceedingly fresh ingredients. And each dish plated to perfection.

Every detail, down to their dishware (local, handmade ceramic, of course) was meticulously chosen to reflect the culinary heritage of Costa Rica mixed with globalized recipes that would appeal to the traveling set.

And beyond the food and ambiance of the restaurant, the service staff there and at the bar will undoubtedly become those “friends you meet on vacation” – the friendly face who you check in with at the end of the day, chat about your experiences with, share your thoughts on the food, discuss ingredients, and say goodnight to before retiring to your bungalow.

In particular, Hotel Three Sixty’s front desk and concierge staff execute flawless service. I had essentially no need to plan anything myself – my itinerary, transport, and even restaurant reservations were all handled by the concierge staff at my request. Need a taxi? They can book it. Want to do a snorkeling adventure on Caño Island?

They’ll sort out the time and day if you ask. Want to head down the mountain for dinner in the village? They’ll happily snag you a table. And at the end of your adventures each day, they’ll warmly greet you every time you arrive back at the hotel, and they’ll be there to send you off when you head out on your next excursion. In between, they’re simply a WhatsApp message away.

With 360 degree views of the top of the rain forest canopy and the stunning vistas of the Pacific Ocean, this adult-only luxury retreat with 12 villas would actually be an amazing location for many types of films.

If you plan to drive yourself up to the resort, make sure it’s a 4×4. I actually don’t think you’d make it all the way without one, especially in rainy season. Speaking of which, that season is basically from May through December, but even during that time, I think I would love it.

In the lobby of the Hotel Three Sixty is this stunning rock sculpture in the center with an open roof above. Large linked chains hang down and when it rains, the sound on the roof coupled with the draining down the links and spilling onto the natural local stones is hypnotically calming. And there’s an aroma that is almost indescribable: fresh, clean, and floral come to mind.

Each of the twelve villas have “wow” inducing views, and all of the villas face out to mountains, the ocean, or both. You can choose if you want sunrise or sunset views . From my terrace I was mesmerized watching toucans, monkeys, and sloths! Each villa has its own private balcony and is equipped with black out curtains. I kept mine open, choosing to wake up every day, the natural way, and boy, did I see some amazing sunrises.

I loved that my villa had an in-room espresso machine and a fully stocked refrigerator. Each night I slept so deeply on their king-size organic, handmade Simmons Beauty rest recharge mattress, and being right smack in the middle of a rain forest it made sense that I had an over-sized rain shower in the bath. Along with organic soaps and shampoos, which were invigorating, they also provided a great smelling bug repellent lotion. I found this to be a great relief, for I, like many others, am a mosquito magnet. To my surprise and delight, up at the hotel there was always a breeze and not once did I see a mosquito during my entire stay.

I could have relaxed by the pool all day, every day, waiting for Bond to emerge, but there were exciting excursions to experience, and the hotel was fantastic about setting these side trips up. If I had had more time I would have included their whale and dolphin watching tour, the chocolate tour, and I think maybe the Nauyaca Waterfalls. I chose the coffee plantation and the mangrove
tour.

The next morning, I drove from Hotel Three Sixty to the Cafe Don Emilio Coffee Tour ( instagram.com/cafedonemilio_8 ) with Wagner Aguila who is a super knowledgeable and friendly local guide. The steep and winding drive up the mountain to San Luis was an adventure in itself, but he handled it like a pro. Once we arrived at this family owned farm, we were warmly greeted by Deiner, who is the son of Don Emilio, the owner of the plantation. The view that high up and facing out to the Pacific Ocean is mind-bogglingly beautiful. With the added rooster crowing and exotic birds chirping in the trees, the experience was magnificent.

We learned all the ins and outs of farming a coffee plantation. The planting, the harvesting, the picking, and the filtering out of bad berries, removing the coffee berries’ husks, all done naturally and by hand. Then there’s the roasting and ultimately tasting the coffee. And I am not just saying this, I mean it, this was the best cup of coffee I’ve ever enjoyed. Drinking it black, it had an amazing sweet aftertaste. It was so wonderful to see Deiner’s entire family working together to help make their endeavor a success. And what a success it is!

The other excursion was a mangrove tour. The official definition is: “Mangroves are tropical plants that are adapted to loose, wet soils, salt water and being periodically submerged by tides.” I had done one mangrove tour before in Florida and it was peaceful and lovely, but the captain of the ship knew very little and really didn’t explain much of what we were seeing. Not so with Sierpe Mangrove Tours ( sierpemangrovetour.com ).

At high tide, we glided out into the river in a flat bottom boat and right away Moises pointed out to me a small boa constrictor followed by what looked like a black ladder climbing up the trunk of a coconut tree. The ladder were little bats and even some babies. In the past I had only seen them hanging from perches, not clinging to trunks of trees. No matter how you feel about bats, you would have to love these bats as they can eat up to 1,200 mosquitos an hour !

Suddenly we heard rustling in the trees above us. They were tiny light brown squirrel monkeys. There was even a mom with a baby clinging to her back hopping from branch to branch. We also saw white faced capuchin monkeys, black face monkeys, and white and blue herons. Then we found the elusive and famously slow-moving sloths. There’s something so magical, meditative, and exciting about floating through the mangroves.

Back at Hotel Three Sixty we headed for the amazing restaurant Kua Kua, which translates to butterfly. My favorite dish of all was their Olla de Carne (beef soup). As they describe it, it’s a classic Costa Rican beef broth soup, with mini carrots, corn tortillas, baby corn, potatoes, flank and Coulotte steak served with sweet plantain. You pour your own broth over the ingredients and wow! Flavor bombs! I’ve always thought chicken soup was the cure all for everything? Now, it’s Olla de Carne. I could eat this soup every day, it felt so restorative and delicious.

My fave breakfast was their Chia Pudding in coconut milk, with red berry jam, granola and fresh seasonal fruit. The fruit in Ojochal is superior.

The entire complex encompasses fifty-eight acres of pristine rain forest, is Plant Protection Certified, which means no trees were cut down when the hotel was constructed in 2018. Plus, they are a partner of One Tree Planted; for every night that a guest stays, they plant one tree in Costa Rica. The hotel has a fantastic spa, a yoga sanctuary, and their own tropical rain forest trail that loops around the property where you’ll see plenty of flora and fauna. I spotted numerous capuchin monkeys and toucans.

Most importantly, the Hotel Three Sixty welcomes guests from all walks of life. While I was there, there were two solo women visiting, as well as several straight couples and a gay couple.

As beautiful and exotic as the hotel is, it’s the people I met who work there and their genuine kindness and enthusiasm that I found most endearing.

“I can walk down to the beach on the treetops.”

Or at least that was my first impression upon opening the curtains and gazing at the rainforest and the Pacific Ocean from the balcony of our sunrise villa at the Hotel Three Sixty in Costa Rica .

My boyfriend and I had arrived via a flight from Palm Springs well after dark the previous night. The moon shed enough light only for hints of the jaw-dropping views to come from nearly everywhere in the resort complex. We came looking for an escape from the real world and a chance to connect at this boutique property in the relatively undiscovered town of Ojochal in southern Costa Rica.

Thankfully, the Hotel Three Sixty not only fit the bill – it wildly exceeded our expectations.

The Hotel Three Sixty sits on a 58-acre private rainforest reserve at a roughly 1000-foot elevation, which results in cooling winds and stunning views of the ocean and rainforest.

This region near the border with Panama is a nature lover’s paradise with abundant flora and fauna, stunning waterfalls and warm water beaches, and a pleasantly surprising number of restaurants reflecting the region’s intersection of the local cuisine and contributions from its French and American ex-pat communities.

But the star of our visit was Hotel Three Sixty and its incomparable staff, who were dedicated to providing a level of service I had not experienced in my travels to date.

“Authentic, laid-back luxury,” says Hotel Three Sixty owner Trevor Ling when asked to describe his resort. “A major factor in that is our location. We aren’t surrounded by other hotels and businesses, and that’s the allure. The wildlife is naturally abundant because we aren’t near busy roads or locations with crowds of rowdy guests scaring away the animals. Because we’re 12 villas in size, even when we’re at capacity it never feels overrun. Our staff can take attentive care of guest needs because for us it’s quality, not quantity. Our priority is providing an elevated and exceptional experience.”

Laid-back luxury is an accurate description of our villa, which was large and tastefully decorated. All villas feature a king-sized bed, upgraded linens and toiletries, and floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors opening to a spacious balcony. Our shower was comfortably big enough for the two of us and offered both privacy and stunning views. All villas are also (thankfully) soundproofed.

When we did venture off the property, the local area featured natural wonders like Nauyaca Waterfalls ( nauyacawaterfallscostarica.com ) and the famed disappearing Whale’s Tail isthmus at Marino Ballena National Park ( www.sinac.go.cr ). There are several beaches within a short ride from the resort, and we spent hours swimming in the 85-degree waters at the Whale’s Tail before the beaches disappeared at high tide.

Further away but accessible by boat is Corcovado National Park , the crown jewel of Costa Rica which also ranks as one of the most biodiverse regions in the world. Here you can see rare and endangered wildlife like jaguars, monkeys, sloths, birds, spiders, snakes, crocodiles, and more living in their natural habitat and free of fear from hunters, poachers, and encroaching civilization.

Despite the natural wonders in the surrounding area, we were equally content exploring Hotel Three Sixty’s private rainforest reserve via its meandering nature trail. We saw several Panamanian white-faced capuchin monkeys swinging on the tree limbs above us and heard the frightening cries of the aptly named mantled howler monkey during our admittedly wet walk through the rainforest. Not visible on the trail but more prevalent than monkeys elsewhere at the resort, though, were seemingly ever-present flocks of multicolored parakeets.

The natural beauty of the resort extended to the view from the compact fitness center. Floor-to-ceiling windows allowed us to remain amid the rainforest while working out in air-conditioned comfort. The fitness center included a treadmill, weight machine, and dumbbells. Sorry, no stationary bike for those with questionable knees.

There’s also a full-service massage and Zen center. There was only one massage room, but it was large enough for our couple’s massage and foot scrub.

The central hub of the Hotel Three Sixty is its open-air lobby and Kua Kua Restaurant . Arriving guests emerge from the sheltering rainforest to be greeted with stunning 360-degree views. The unique design allows guests to be immersed in the natural environment while protected from its more extreme elements.

We dined daily at the Kua Kua. While we tried different dishes at lunch and dinner, we never strayed at breakfast. My boyfriend loved the Chilaquiles in Green Sauce while I couldn’t say no to the Two-Sauce Swiss Enchiladas . You can’t go wrong with any item on the menu, but my personal non-breakfast favorites were the Peruvian Chaufa-Style Fried Rice and the Fish and Shrimp Sashimi appetizer. Our conversations were often muted while dining, but only because we spent so much time savoring the views along with the food.

The exemplary Hotel Three Sixty service extended to our servers at Kua Kua. My boyfriend and I are not fans of spicy mayo on our sushi, and I half-heartedly noted this aversion before our arrival. When we ordered sushi on our first night, our server said they would hold the spicy mayo before I could make the request. Suffice it to say we were suitably impressed and pleased.

While Kua Kua is the only restaurant at the resort, the local area provides numerous outstanding dining options. These include Heliconia (FB @heliconiarest ) and Citrus ( citrusrestaurante.com ). Both restaurants are a short drive from the resort. Heliconia features local cuisine in a lush setting overlooking a stream and rainforest. Citrus features a fusion of Asian, French, Middle Eastern, and local cuisines with a great wine list in a casual yet refined open-air setting.

Our fave off-site restaurant, though, was Fuego Brewing Company ( www.fuegobrew.com ) in the surfing town of Dominical a short drive from the Nauyaca Falls and Marino Ballena National Park. We loved the lush grounds and garden setting as much as the beer flights, Tuna Poke Bowl, and the ‘special of the day’ bouillabaisse.

We visited Hotel Three Sixty at the height of the rainy season, but not once did we get rained out of any activities. The rain fell relentlessly at times during the afternoon, but the mornings were dry, and the rains were only periodic. When it did rain, we relaxed and enjoyed the views from our villa, safe and very dry. Normally, we’d consider daylight hours spent in a hotel as a negative, but here it was a private – and very romantic – escape.

Oversized umbrellas awaited us in holding racks outside our villa door for those rainy moments at the resort.

If we took home one regret from our stay, it was that we couldn’t spend more time enjoying the resort’s infinity pool. We spent only one afternoon lounging in its cooling waters while enjoying the views and sipping cocktails delivered by the attentive Hotel Three Sixty staff.

We were never alone at the resort, but not once did the Hotel Three Sixty feel crowded or even busy. There were several other couples at the property, and we grew accustomed to nodding at each other and politely saying hello, but not much more and that was OK. Everyone was centered instead on experiencing the Hotel Three Sixty with their significant other, including LGBTQ+ couples.

“The local community is filled with members of the LGBTQ community, including members of our staff,” Ling says. “We want travelers to only focus on the adventures they’re having, the wildlife they’re seeing, and the memories they’re making. There’s no room for worrying about if you’re accepted or how to act. You’re fully accepted here as you are. It’s the pura vida lifestyle.”

But there’s nothing wrong with spending a majority of time kicking back at the hotel. Turn the edge of the infinity pool into a makeshift table for a truly fine cocktail and ceviche, and admire the canopy of trees below, some dusted with gold flowers, others covered by puffs of white clouds. You likely won’t even mind when the bugs glitter and flutter in front of your face, or drop into your fresh fruit bowl — you gently lift them out and send them on their way. Hotel Three Sixty is an adults-only resort, which is a new experience for this writer. However, with all due respect to my children, it added to the serenity and uniqueness of the location.

Owner Trevor Ling, originally from England, worked as a wealth management specialist for 30 years before turning his focus to the world of hospitality. After moving to Costa Rica, he opened Hotel Three Sixty in 2017 with investor friends. He and his team are especially proud of the hotel’s dedication to environmental sustainability. Guests can see evidence of this everywhere—from the organic or locally-sourced food served in the hotel to ecological cleaning products and organic amenities offered in the rooms.

One of the many standout features of the property is its friendly and accommodating staff. From the hotel manager to its chef, servers and cart drivers, a genuine and sincere effort to care for guests is always evident.

The staff is also happy to make recommendations and help arrange for special tours to nearby destinations. One such memorable expedition is the Nauyaca Waterfall Tour. A 4X4 takes groups to two of the region’s spectacular waterfalls, one can be viewed at a distance while the other allows visitors to watch daredevils dive off ledges into the pool below or splash into the surrounding water to cool off.

Another not-to-be-missed excursion is the immersive boat tour exploring the Costa Rican mangroves and its varied residents. Guests can expect to see countless monkeys frolicking and sometimes sleeping among the tropical plants where they live and play, and if you’re lucky a long-distance sighting of a boa constrictor. According to the boat guide Vilmar Lopez, more than 375 types of birds reside there. As for dining facilities, the food at the hotel’s Kua Kua restaurant is filling and plentiful and the nearby bar serves up wonderful tropical drinks as well (don’t miss the frozen banana daiquiri) Close to the hotel are several outstanding local restaurants such as Fuego, a popular local brewery which offers quality craft beer, Citrus, a well-known dining spot in the area with offerings from Asia, and the Middle East and even France. Heliconia is also a crowd-pleaser, offering up authentic Costa Rican cuisine.

On-site offerings dedicated to self-care include a yoga deck, a gym, and an easy-to-hike nature trail. Not to be missed, however, is the Jungle Spa which offers massages, wraps/scrubs, facials, and many other services. I can tell you from experience that masseuse Shirley Rodriguez’s shoulder and back massages are one of a kind.

For years, Costa Rican vacations have filled my own social media feed and the recommendations continued to grow over the years. I’ve visited Costa Rica a couple of times for destination weddings, traveling most recently to Ojochal on the southwest coast of the country, with highlights on my vacation that included a Sierpe Wildlife Mangrove Tour to spot Capuchin monkeys and an excursion to the Nauyaca Waterfalls. For every night that a guest books a stay at Hotel Three Sixty in Costa Rica, a tree is planted. The adults-only boutique hotel is nestled within a 58-acre rainforest reserve in Ojochal, a village in the Puntarenas Province that spans Costa Rica’s western coast. It partners with One Tree Planted to give back to its natural surroundings, but Hotel Three Sixty and its setting are equally restorative for guests. I should know: as a visitor from the Canadian Rockies — where the climate is dry and cold for eight months out of the year, and greenery is scarce — it was as if my stay at the hotel replenished me from those months without sunlight and vitamin D.

Indoor-outdoor villas that immerse you in the rainforest

Upon entering Hotel Three Sixty, I was greeted with a complimentary guava smoothie, giving me a literal taste of the Costa Rican bounty that rings the property. Hotel Three Sixty has 12 villas; I stayed in a deluxe villa. At 516 square feet — with a 130-square-foot balcony — the deluxe villa is one of the biggest hotel rooms I’ve ever lodged in.

What stood out to me first in the spacious bedroom was the expansive windows, which open to breathtaking views of the rainforest and Pacific Ocean from any angle. This indoor-outdoor design immerses you in the lush landscape even when you’re in your room, which comes outfitted with a king-size bed, a his-and-hers bathroom, a separate half bath, standard amenities including a fully stocked bar, and Indonesian furniture that fosters both elegance and comfort.

My favorite feature of the villa was the balcony. Furnished with a coffee table and two chairs, the balcony was the perfect place to start the day, sipping a morning beverage while listening to the soothing sounds of the surrounding wildlife. But on days when it’s too hot and humid to sit comfortably outside, you can still admire the view from the comfort of the air-conditioned room.

The ultimate pool and spa days

Hotel Three Sixty has a host of amenities that reinforce its natural beauty, from an infinity pool overlooking the Pacific Ocean, to a rainforest spa and yoga deck, to hiking trails. And because the hotel only has 12 rooms, the common spaces are never crowded. This proved to be particularly refreshing at the panoramic pool and poolside bar. Eventually, the hotel staff will learn your name and your favorite drink or preferred bite, adding to the sense of intimacy.

At the hotel’s spa, you can book treatments ranging from facials to massages and body scrubs. During my visit, I opted for the hot stone massage. Ten minutes before my appointment, a golf cart picked me up in the hotel lobby and whisked me two minutes away to an indoor-outdoor wellness center that’s divided into two sections: half gym, half spa. The waiting area offered shelter from the tropical rain outside.

When I met my massage therapist, Shirley, I was able to select a target area and quickly drifted into a deep relaxation — so much so that I fell asleep. After my treatment, I was offered a tea of my choice and escorted back to the main property.

Dining at Hotel Three Sixty and beyond

Hotel Three Sixty’s on-site bar-restaurant, Kua Kua Bar, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily until 9:30 PM. The menu is diverse, featuring options like chia seed pudding and French toast, a traditional Costa Rican breakfast, and sushi and poke, as well as a variety of vegan and gluten-free dishes. Conveniently, breakfast is included for guests, and nearby alternatives are limited due to the hotel’s secluded location.

The closest off-property restaurant is called Citrus. It’s a five-minute drive, and the hotel can arrange transfers. Citrus serves a blend of French, Costa Rican, and European meals in an airy atmosphere. All of the food I tried at Citrus was fresh and packed with bright flavors — one standout was the steak frites with chimichurri.

Roughly 40 minutes from the hotel, Fuego Brew Co is a must-visit if you want to sip craft beer in a jungle-like setting. Fuego’s in-house brewery pours exclusive beers that pair nicely with its range of Costa Rican and American fare. Some of my favorite dishes were the patacones (fried plantains) and ceviche. While the beer and menu largely cater to adult taste buds, Fuego is also welcoming for kids.

Another restaurant in the area, Heliconia, is located 15 minutes from the hotel. Heliconia is more upscale than Fuego but on par with Citrus, with an ambiance that feels like an extension of the rainforest. The menu is a mix of Costa Rican dishes and international cuisine. The sea bass, rice, and vegetable plate with Caribbean sauce that I ate there was one of my favorite meals of my trip — spicy but delicious.

Outdoor activities on and off the property

You don’t need to travel far to participate in one of Ojochal’s finest activities: nature walks. In fact, Hotel Three Sixty has a network of nature trails that cover a little less than a mile of moderate terrain. As you walk, take in the area’s biodiversity and wildlife, including eagles, hummingbirds, toucans, scarlet macaws, and capuchin monkeys. The hotel can provide binoculars for optimal viewing.

Another exciting adventure within an hour’s drive of the hotel is the Nauyaca Waterfalls. There, you can climb the falls and jump into the large basin below to swim, as well as explore the rainforest and falls area on foot or by horseback. Ask the hotel about arranging a transfer or excursions — just be sure to book the activity in advance as hourly time slots are limited.

For a different perspective on the rainforest environment, consider a Sierpe Mangrove Tour. Beginning with a 45-minute drive from the hotel, this 2.5-hour guided boat tour along the Sierpe River creates an opportunity to observe countless species, from monkeys and birds to Jesus lizards, crocodiles, turtles, and macaws. Of course, you’ll also get to see a mangrove forest up close.

How to get to Hotel Three Sixty

There are several ways to reach Hotel Three Sixty. I flew 4.5 hours from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in New Jersey to San José, the capital of Costa Rica. Upon arrival at Juan Santamaría International Airport, my group took a shuttle to a nearby domestic airport — the transfer only took a couple of minutes. From there, we boarded a private mini-plane for a 20-minute flight to the Quepos airport. Finally, a private shuttle drove us to the hotel, which took about an hour, and a car led us into the gated property. You can also arrange a private car transfer through the hotel or rent a car and drive four hours to the property from the airport. This is a cheaper alternative but may take longer due to traffic.

When planning a visit to Hotel Three Sixty, be sure to account for travel time and the various transportation options, as reaching the property might take an entire day. If you intend to rent a car and drive from the airport or off the property, choose an SUV due to the uneven roads.

The living areas take up less than 8% of the acreage, and guests are encouraged to wander the jungle trails to commune with nature and see some of the types of trees planted through a partnership with One Tree Planted. If you’re truly lucky, you might even see some of the creatures that benefit from the reforestation, including white-faced Capuchin monkeys, yellow-throated toucans, glass frogs and giant anteaters. For every night of your stay, the hotel will plant one tree somewhere in the country’s highlands, lowlands or mangroves.

Also in practice here: grey water reuse, irrigating with collected rain, green cleaning products, biodegradable bath products by Costa Rican company Raw Botanicals, a no-pesticide policy, and a food-and-beverage program that is locally sourced, organic and sustainable.
